Canadians looking to apply for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) should mark Tuesday, June 2 — that's when applications open for the next intake. If you already have CDCP coverage, your renewal deadline is June 1.

The program is one of the country's largest social programs. Last year, 6.58 million eligible applicants were approved, and 4.34 million received care. It gives Canadians access to over 28,000 participating oral health providers across the country.

What it covers: Many services don't need preauthorization — diagnostic and preventive services like exams, cleaning, and x-rays; basic services like fillings, root canals, and periodontal work; and major services like crowns and dentures. Anesthesia and sedation are covered. Orthodontic services aren't covered yet but will be in future.

Who qualifies: You don't have access to private dental insurance (through an employer, family, pension plan, or purchased policy); your adjusted family net income is less than $90,000; you're a Canadian resident for tax purposes; and you've filed Canadian tax returns (so your family income can be assessed). If your income is under $70,000, CDCP covers 100 per cent of service costs. Higher incomes may have a co-payment.

What to bring: Your Social Insurance Number (if available), date of birth, full name, home and mailing address, and any existing dental coverage through government social programs.
