A rockslide near Canmore has closed Grassi Lakes and surrounding hiking areas, with Alberta Parks warning that unsupported rock above the road could trigger a second slide.

Closed trails include Grassi Lakes Upper, Grassi Lakes Interpretive, and Reclaimer Trail. The highway is shut down in both directions between the Grassi Lakes turnoff and the top of the hill. Riders of Rohan Trail remains open.

The closures affect access to nearby day-use areas including Ha Ling Peak, Miner's Peak, East End of Rundle, and Goat Creek trailheads. Visitors can still reach these areas from Highway 40 South and the open portion of Spray Lakes Road northbound through Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, though travel times will be longer.

Parks officials said assessments are ongoing and the timeline for repairs and reopening remains uncertain. The agency is urging the public to respect all closures and stay clear of the area.

If you're planning a hiking trip to the Canmore area this weekend, check Alberta Parks' website for updated closure maps before heading out.
