Monday heat's coming in — Vancouver, June 1

Good morning. You've got a Monday ahead—17°C, partly cloudy, and UV sitting at 7.0, which is high enough that sunscreen's worth the five seconds before you head out. Light holds till just after 9 PM tonight, so you've got a proper long day to work with. It's the start of the week, so the commute's worth thinking about.

If you're heading west on the TransCanada this morning, give yourself extra time. There's a vehicle incident between Douglas Road and Exit 29 (Willingdon Ave side in Burnaby) that's got the HOV lane blocked and traffic backing up. The next update comes at 9:15 AM, so check in before you leave if you're timing it close. It's the kind of Monday morning that can catch you off guard.

On the broader local front, there's some real stuff moving. The water strike that's been ramping up has now expanded to filtration plants across Metro Vancouver, so brown water's possible in your tap this week—worth knowing if you've got laundry or dishes stacking up. Separately, YVR's pushing hard on two fronts: new direct routes to Vietnam and South America (good news for trade and travel options), and a longer play to bring a high-speed rail terminus to the airport instead of downtown. The airport's got bigger ambitions.

Temperature-wise, settle in—it's going to climb. We're looking at over 30°C later this week before the rain rolls back in, so today's mild morning is the calm before it. Enjoy it while it lasts.

For dinner, if you're thinking about heading out, the city's restaurants are gearing up for World Cup crowds, and there are some standout dishes worth a detour this month if you're looking for a reason to sit down somewhere good. The weather's still cool enough that you don't need a patio, but it won't be long.

Tonically speaking, Monday's got low-key energy. If you want something to do tonight, Clara La San's at the Vogue at 8 PM, or there's the SOUNDS Syndicate at Fortune Sound Club at 10 if you're in a later mood. Otherwise it's a quiet night—good for walking it off outside or just settling in early.

Cheers. Get some sun on your face today while the heat's still building in.
