Friday kickoff with a layer and an umbrella — Vancouver, June 5.

Good morning. Friday's landed and it's noticeably cooler than the last couple of days—we're sitting at 12°C with light rain, so grab a layer you can move around in and keep an umbrella close. UV's still at 5.0, which means sunscreen's still worth a quick pass if you're out between the showers. Light holds till 9:13 PM, so you've got over 16 hours of daylight to work with. That's plenty of time to sort your evening plans.

If you're commuting on the bus, the 247 Downtown has a detour running from 6:45 AM through 7:00 PM today—construction's pushing it off the regular route to Capilano Rd and Capilano Crescent. Nothing urgent, but worth knowing if that's your line. Over at Waterfront Station, both escalators on the Expo Line platform are temporarily out of service, so give yourself extra time if you're heading through there. And if you usually catch the 68 Wesbrook Village from UBC at 8:40 or 9:25 this morning, those trips are cancelled today due to operational issues.

On the local front: support's surging for the family of a slain Lumby mother, and teachers' union is pushing for a probe into the Education Ministry. If you're heading to Ridge Meadows Hospital this weekend, there's a maternity diversion in place—check ahead if that applies to you. Meanwhile, YVR's gearing up for a serious World Cup push, expecting 88,000 passengers daily.

For food, it's a good day for somewhere warm. Shawarma Time's opening at Hamilton and West Georgia if you want something hearty. If brunch is calling, the Sutton Place is marking 40 years with an exclusive chocolate brunch—worth the trip if you've got time. Nana's Green Tea's opened downtown and they're giving away free matcha this weekend, so that's worth a stop if you're after something lighter. Golden Plates has the roundup of the city's best food and drink right now if you need ideas.

Tonight's the start of your weekend, so pick your vibe. The Whitecaps 2 are at home against Portland Timbers 2 at Swangard Stadium at 6:00 PM if you're into soccer. For live music, Rostam's playing the American Stories Tour at Fortune Sound Club at 7:30 PM with Henry Solomon and Elori Saxl, or you've got the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at the Orpheum at 7:30 PM if orchestral's your thing. Robby Hoffman's doing stand-up at the Vogue Theatre at 7:00 PM if comedy's on your mind, or there's FORBIDDEN NIGHTS UK happening at the Pearl at 7:00 PM. Whatever you're after, you've got light till well past dinner time.

Have a good one.
