Update — July 25, 2026: On July 21, an armed robbery at McDonald's inside Westview Shopping Centre preceded the RCMP shooting, during which a software developer named Arman Abadi intervened to disarm a suspect who was holding a female employee hostage with a knife. After Abadi and another bystander restrained the man and removed the knife, the suspect threatened he had a box cutter, stole a truck from the plaza, and crashed it into parked cars before attempting to carjack another vehicle at a nearby Esso station. North Vancouver RCMP arrived to dozens of witnesses and engaged the suspect, who ran toward a police vehicle.
One man was shot by North Vancouver RCMP officers Tuesday afternoon at Westview Shopping Centre after an altercation that began with an attempted robbery at the McDonald's.
The incident unfolded around 1:30 p.m. on July 21. According to witnesses, the suspect used a large box cutter knife in the McDonald's robbery attempt, then fled to the parking lot where he tried to steal a vehicle, crashing it into another car. He then attempted to carjack someone at the nearby Esso gas station.
Witnesses said officers used a Taser twice before shooting the suspect multiple times. One witness described the escalation: "He then went bolting towards the police. I watched him run right towards the police cruiser and then jump in the seat. They clearly shot him. I think it was about three or four times." The suspect was taken away in an ambulance.
North Vancouver RCMP closed access to Westview Shopping Centre, with the Esso gas station and 7-Eleven currently behind police tape.
