Maxime Crépeau will start in goal for Canada at the FIFA World Cup. Coach Jesse Marsch announced the decision Thursday, ending a months-long competition with Dayne St. Clair for the keeper role.

The 32-year-old from Candiac, Que., plays for Orlando City in Major League Soccer and has 12 clean sheets in 31 appearances for the senior national team. He missed the 2022 World Cup after breaking his leg 18 days before Canada's opening match against Belgium.

Canada plays its final exhibition match Friday against Ireland at Montreal's Saputo Stadium before the tournament begins. The squad opens against Bosnia-Herzegovina on July 12 in Toronto, then faces Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24 in group-stage matches in Vancouver.

Crépeau's selection marks a return to the international stage after a four-year absence from the biggest tournament. For Montreal readers watching the World Cup unfold here at home, it's a familiar local face in the net.
