Cool start, high UV, and theatre's calling—Calgary, June 3rd.

Good morning. It's 6°C and partly cloudy out there—so grab a layer before you head out. The UV index is sitting at 7, which is high, so even though it's cool you'll want sunscreen on any exposed skin if you're spending time outside. Light holds till 9:44 PM tonight, so you've got plenty of evening to work with.

Commute-wise, keep an eye on foothills road conditions if that's your route—the usual suspects are always worth checking before you head out, especially on a Wednesday when everyone's in the rhythm of the week.

There's been a rough stretch for one local family after an Afghan widow was hit by a runaway vehicle; the story's part of a longer streak of tragedy for them. It's a hard reminder of how quickly things can turn. On a lighter note, there's some real conversation happening around whether corner stores in Calgary are dying out or staging a comeback—worth a read if you've got five minutes with your coffee.

The city's also making moves on natural gas fees with ATCO, eyeing another $25 million and shifting how the collection happens. And if you were at City Hall recently, you might've caught the Mayor's Environment Expo drawing 2,000 students—good to see that kind of turnout. Over in East Village, Scotia Place is now past the halfway mark on construction and tracking for a fall 2027 opening.

If you're thinking about eating out, Ricardo's Hideaway is closing after a decade on 5th Street, so if that's been on your list it's worth a visit sooner rather than later. Paper Lantern and Prosperity Bar are both built on family restaurant legacies if you're looking for something with roots. Yummy Slice just planted its flag on 52nd Street SE if you're in that part of town. There's also a solid roundup of June spots worth the detour—Teatro, River Cafe, Caesar's, and Major Tom all made the cut recently.

This evening, Come From Away is running at both Theatre Calgary's Max Bell Centre and The Palace Theatre, both shows at 7:30 PM. If live theatre's your thing, either one's worth the ticket. The show runs through Saturday afternoon, so you've got a couple of days to catch it if tonight doesn't work. The Black Keys are coming Sunday night if you're 18+ and looking for something louder.

It's a good day for a quiet park walk if you want to catch some of that daylight before the evening settles in. Stay warm, slap on the sunscreen, and have a solid Wednesday.
