Ontario Provincial Police will launch a public safety campaign focused on intersection dangers, following the deadly crash on Friday that killed five children near Kitchener-Waterloo.

The Perth County detachment is set to kick off the "Stop, Look, Live" awareness and enforcement campaign next week across the West Region. The blitz was planned well in advance, but the timing is a tragic coincidence with Friday's collision, OPP media relations officer Derek Rogers said.

From 2021 to 2025, almost 5,000 motor vehicle collisions were recorded in the region, with about a quarter of those collisions occurring at intersections. Investigators say they could not yet comment on specifics of Friday's crash, including whether seatbelts were properly used, and it may be days or weeks before more details are made public.

Mapleton Township Mayor Gregg Davidson said the community is offering supports to volunteer firefighters and others who witnessed the aftermath. "Our community is strong, and our community is resilient," he said.
