Ontario Provincial Police Const. Tarun Bali was killed Tuesday while investigating a call near Hearst, about three hours northwest of Timmins. He was seriously injured around 12:30 p.m. at Kendall Concession Road 7 and Concession Road 6 and later pronounced dead at the scene.

One person is in custody. Police have not released details about how Bali was killed or what led to the investigation.

OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique said in a statement that Bali's "courage and commitment to serving others will never be forgotten." The investigation involves the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, the Office of the Chief Coroner, and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

This is a sobering loss for the province's policing community. Bali's family and colleagues are in the thoughts of those who serve alongside law enforcement across Ontario.
