Justin Trudeau attended a FIFA World Cup match this past week, but it wasn't Canada's opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Instead, the 54-year-old ex-politician was in Los Angeles on June 14, watching the United States men's national team take on Paraguay.

The choice seemed odd — skipping Canada's game to watch the USA, especially with tensions between the two nations. But Trudeau had a straightforward reason: he was there as a supportive boyfriend.

"Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call," Trudeau wrote on social media. "But you know who I'm rooting for to take the Cup."

Trudeau is in a high-profile relationship with American pop star Katy Perry, who performed her song "Wonder" at the opening ceremony before the USA kicked off. The performance went viral, amassing over 4 million views on YouTube.

Trudeau and Perry were spotted sitting together in a suite during the match. He was even seen cheering when the USA scored. The power couple appeared to be enjoying themselves as the USA dominated, defeating Paraguay 4-1.

The choice has drawn mixed reactions from Canadian soccer fans, many of whom think Trudeau should have been at Canada's game instead. It remains unclear whether he will attend one of Canada's remaining group stage games against Qatar on June 18 or Switzerland on June 24.
