Two people died after a vehicle fleeing a Sûreté du Québec patrol car crashed into a body of water in Coteau-du-Lac early Wednesday morning.

At approximately 1:11 a.m., an SQ patrol noticed a vehicle whose driver was allegedly violating court conditions and attempted to intercept him. Around two minutes later, the driver lost control and the vehicle ended up in the river.

Both occupants were pulled from the water with serious injuries and transported to hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Reports indicate the driver was an 18-year-old man.

Because the deaths occurred during a police operation, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) has taken over the investigation. Seven BEI investigators have been assigned to the case, and the bureau has requested support services from Montreal police.

The BEI is asking anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them through their website.
