A section of Banff National Park remains closed nearly a year after a rockfall killed two hikers and injured three others.

The area around Bow Glacier Falls has been inaccessible since June 19, 2025, while Parks Canada completes a geotechnical assessment. Federal officials still cannot say when the trail will reopen.

The rockfall occurred on a popular hiking trail near the falls, killing a Calgary woman and a 33-year-old man from British Columbia. Parks Canada officials have said nothing could have prevented or predicted the slide, as it resulted from geological forces common in mountainous areas.

The closure is being enforced strictly. Parks Canada spokesman James Eastham said the agency hasn't heard of any violations, but those who ignore the closure order could be arrested or ticketed — with potential fines as high as $25,000.

Bow Glacier Falls is located about 200 kilometres northwest of Calgary.
