Canadian midfielder Marcelo Flores will miss this summer's World Cup after suffering a serious knee injury. The 22-year-old from Georgetown, Ontario, ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while playing for Tigres UNAL in the CONCACAF Champions Cup on Saturday.

Flores went down in the 77th minute and left the field in tears as his club fell to Toluca in a shootout. National team head coach Jesse Marsch said he spoke with Flores both that night and the next morning, telling him he's welcome to come be around the team at the tournament after undergoing knee surgery.

Flores was one of ten midfielders named to Canada's 26-player World Cup roster on Friday, though he wasn't at the team's training camp in Charlotte last week. Marsch says he hasn't yet decided who will take the vacant roster spot, but will make a choice at least 24 hours before Canada kicks off against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12.
