Canadians affected by a deadly 2024 listeria outbreak linked to plant-based beverages can now file claims for compensation from a $7.5 million class-action settlement.

Claims administrator Concilia Services Inc. opened the filing window Friday. Eligible Canadians have until October 16, 2026, to submit a claim.

The outbreak involved listeria-contaminated Silk and Great Value plant-based refrigerated beverages manufactured by Joriki Inc. Between August 2023 and mid-July 2024, the Public Health Agency of Canada received reports of 20 illnesses, 15 hospitalizations, and 3 deaths linked to the products.

Compensation varies by severity of illness: $400 for symptoms lasting up to 48 hours; $1,500 for symptoms lasting more than 48 hours and up to one week; $7,000 for symptoms lasting longer than a week without hospitalization; $10,000 to $30,000 for hospitalization without severe complications; and up to $150,000 for hospitalization with severe complications or permanent symptoms. Families of those who died can receive up to $300,000.

Eligible claimants must have purchased or ingested recalled products or experienced physical or psychological harm after consuming them. Supporting documentation is required. The settlement also names Danone Canada and Walmart Canada as defendants, both of which deny all allegations and wrongdoing.
