The hunt is back on for a suspect in a deadly shooting at Pelican Narrows, a remote First Nation 500 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon, after police released two initial suspects without charges.

A 28-year-old woman was killed Monday when gunfire erupted at a home. A man was hospitalized. Police initially arrested two suspects but confirmed Wednesday that both have been released.

Mounties released video footage showing a person dressed entirely in black with a black head covering running down a road. They believe this is the suspect.

Local residents faced a shelter-in-place order Monday but it was lifted Wednesday. "There is not believed to be an imminent risk to public safety," RCMP said, though the community remains on edge.

Inspector Ashley St. Germaine urged witnesses to come forward. "Homicides are solved with the help of witnesses. We know there are people in the community who have information and have not shared it with police."

Police say those involved likely knew each other and that the shooting followed an altercation at a residence. The incident marks the second homicide in the small community within two weeks, prompting local officials to discuss what they called an "escalating public safety crisis."

RCMP data shows violent crime in the Pelican Narrows area has surged 49 per cent over the past decade, driven by complex issues including mental health and addiction.
