Canadians will no longer pay hidden fees when swapping phone or internet plans. Starting Friday, June 12, the CRTC's new Consumer Protections Action Plan bans activation fees for new plans, modification charges if you want to tweak your service, and early cancellation penalties—unless you're still paying off a device.

Telecommunications companies must automatically add the fee to your ticket when you book online, so you'll see the total upfront. The move mirrors policies in New Zealand, Bhutan, and parts of Europe and North America.

According to a 2026 survey by Broadband Genie, Canadians already pay the steepest internet bills in North America—an average of US$55.26 (C$76.99) per month. The CRTC also introduced simplified Wireless and Internet Codes so you can actually understand what you're signing up for.

CRTC CEO Vicky Eatrides said the change gives Canadians "more control over their Internet and cellphone services" without penalty. If you've been trapped in a plan because of exit fees, June 12 is your opening.
