A Toronto police officer died Thursday after being shot during a warrant operation at a North York apartment complex.

The shooting unfolded around 5:42 a.m. at an apartment on Martha Eaton Way, in the area of Trethewey Drive and Black Creek Drive. Officers were executing a warrant when an exchange of gunfire erupted inside a fourth-floor unit. The officer was transported to Sunnybrook Hospital but was pronounced dead.

A second person was transported to hospital with critical injuries; their identity has not been confirmed. The Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate.

U.S. Ambassador Peter Hoekstra told a Canada-U.S. trade conference that the shooting may be "linked to an investigation in the United States," but did not confirm whether it relates to a March shooting at the U.S. Consulate in downtown Toronto.

"Our thoughts, our prayers are with the family of the police person who was killed," Hoekstra said, noting the incident exemplifies close law enforcement cooperation between the two countries.

The death marks the second police fatality in Ontario this week. On Tuesday, OPP Const. Tarun Bali was killed in Hearst after being struck by a vehicle during an investigation. An 18-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in that case.

The apartment complex where Thursday's shooting occurred is the same building where 8-year-old JahVai Roy was killed by a stray bullet on August 26, 2025, during a gunfire exchange outside. Residents expressed concern about the recurring violence.
