The Montreal police department has suspended two officers and reassigned three others following an internal investigation into alleged racist and discriminatory behaviour at Station 39 in Montreal North.
The probe began in March after employees reported unacceptable conduct within the unit. Police Chief Fady Dagher said Friday the allegations are serious enough to warrant immediate action while the investigation continues.
The alleged behaviour includes misconduct during police interventions and discriminatory treatment of citizens. The conduct may breach the police ethics code and the Criminal Code. A file has been submitted to the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions for review.
"This proven situation is completely unacceptable, and I won't hide the fact that it shocks me deeply," Dagher said. "Maintaining a bond of trust with all communities is crucial."
Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada said she is monitoring the situation closely and has called on the Public Security Minister to accelerate implementation of body-worn cameras for officers, describing them as necessary for accountability.
