A Canadian man was shot and killed at Kruger National Park in South Africa on Wednesday in what authorities said appears to be an accident.

The 69-year-old tourist asked a private guide whether his gun was real during an evening barbecue gathering inside the park. While the operator was demonstrating that the firearm was genuine, the gun discharged, striking the tourist in the upper body.

The man was confirmed dead at the scene. The South African Police Service has opened an investigation into possible charges of culpable homicide and reckless handling of a firearm.

South African National Parks said preliminary information indicates the private guide "accidentally discharged a firearm, resulting in the fatal injury." Global Affairs Canada did not have an immediate comment.
