A 32-year-old Kelowna woman was sentenced Monday to one year in prison and two years of probation for criminal negligence causing bodily harm after unintentionally giving her eight-year-old son methamphetamine.

The incident occurred October 14, 2024, during a Thanksgiving weekend visit. The woman bought two containers of M&Ms from a gas station, ate one herself, then stopped at a friend's house where she smoked crystal methamphetamine and was given extra to take with her. She stored the drug in the empty red candy container before returning home.

That night, she opened a blue tube of M&Ms and split the candy between two containers, giving the blue tube to one child and the red tube—contaminated with methamphetamine—to her son.

The child soon experienced severe hallucinations, agitation, and sleep deprivation. He believed dragons were flying around him, that a doctor was an octopus, and that walls were breathing. In more severe stages, he thought people were watching him and someone was trying to kill him. He remained awake for about 40 hours straight before finally sleeping in hospital, continuing to experience mild hallucinations for another day.

Judge Lisa Wyatt said the woman "put her own interests, and her fear of consequences to herself, ahead of the well-being of her son." The woman initially misled family members and medical staff, only disclosing the drug exposure during a police interview in January 2025.
