Eligible Canadian parents will receive an additional GST top-up payment on June 5 before the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) launches in July with increased payment amounts.

The top-up payment will equal 50 per cent of the total annual GST credit for the period from July 2025 to June 2026, provided households qualified for the January 2026 payment. For example, if a household's annual GST credit was $400, the top-up will be an extra $200.

Starting in July, the CGEB will replace the GST/HST credit with quarterly payments 25 per cent higher than the previous GST payment for five years. Maximum monthly amounts will increase to $666.41 per child under 6 and $562.33 per child aged 6 to 17. Families with a child with an approved Disability Tax Credit can receive an additional $284.25 per month per eligible child.

To qualify, individuals must be at least 19 and have filed their 2024 tax return. Income thresholds vary by household composition. For example, an individual with no children can earn up to $56,181; with one child, $63,161. Those already signed up for direct deposit with the CRA will see payments deposited starting June 5. Paper cheques will be mailed to others, though the CRA urges enrollment in direct deposit.
