Canada Post is pushing ahead with its shift from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes, selecting 37 communities across seven provinces for conversion beginning next year.

The latest phase will affect 485,000 addresses on top of 136,000 already selected for conversion by early 2027. The moves are part of the Crown corporation's broader overhaul as letter mail declines and financial losses mount.

Nearby three-quarters of Canadian addresses already receive mail and parcels through some form of centralized delivery — community mailboxes, apartment lobby boxes, or post office boxes. The remaining four million addresses still enjoy door-to-step service, which the postal service is working to eliminate.

Other reforms in motion include weekend parcel delivery and potential post office closures. The conversions have sparked resistance from some communities, particularly rural and senior-heavy areas where walking to a community mailbox poses physical hardship.

Canada Post says the transitions reduce delivery costs and allow the service to focus resources on parcel handling, where competition from private couriers has intensified.

The announcement marks the latest chapter in a contentious modernization that pits postal efficiency against resident convenience.
