Air Canada, Air Transat, and Sunwing Vacations — a group that includes WestJet — are suspending all Canadian flights to Cuba indefinitely, citing the "current geopolitical situation" on the island.

Canada's major airlines initially halted flights in February. The latest suspension marks a deepening of service disruptions as Cuba faces electricity and gas shortages.

Cuban-Canadians in Toronto remain concerned about family members facing uncertainty due to the ongoing shortages. The suspension also affects Cuba's tourism sector, which has already been battered by the broader geopolitical crisis and international sanctions. Spain's Meliá hotel chain recently shuttered some locations on the island, and Toronto-based Sherritt pulled back from a mining joint venture as U.S. sanctions expand.
