Costco Canada is recalling Lactantia UltraPūr 2% milk sold at its warehouses nationwide due to over-fortification of vitamins A and D.

Dairy company Lactalis Canada issued the recall after discovering the affected product contained vitamin levels exceeding recommended daily intake limits. Excessive amounts of both vitamins "may represent a food safety risk," the company stated.

The recalled product is the two-litre carton with an expiry date of June 22, 2026. It was sold exclusively at Costco warehouses and Costco Business Centres between May and June 2026.

Customers should not consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute the affected product. Anyone with concerns or symptoms from consuming the beverage should consult their doctor.

Costco shoppers can return the product to any Costco warehouse for a full refund. The recall is limited to the specifically identified product and lot — other Lactantia UltraPūr products are not affected.

According to Health Canada guidelines, vitamin D must be added to certain foods including cow's milk and margarine. However, consuming more than the recommended amount of vitamin A can cause it to slowly accumulate in the body's tissues. Excessive vitamin D can lead to hypercalcemia, a condition that causes calcium buildup in the blood and deposits in arteries or soft tissues.
