Thousands of Canadians caught in a 2020 wave of cyberattacks on CRA and Service Canada platforms are about to get paid. The federal court approved an $8.7 million settlement earlier this year for the 47,000 people whose personal and financial data was exposed — and many of whom had fraudulent CERB applications filed in their names.

If you received an email from KPMG about the settlement, you're eligible. You can also check directly at breachsettlementcanada.kpmg.ca using your last name, the last three digits of your SIN, and your email address.

The claims portal is expected to launch sometime this summer. Once it does, you'll have six months to file — either online at the same KPMG portal or by calling 1-833-724-6160.

Compensation breaks into three categories: up to $80 for time spent dealing with unauthorized account access, up to $200 for time spent addressing fraudulent use of your personal information, and up to $5,000 for out-of-pocket expenses directly tied to the breach, like credit monitoring fees or unreimbursed losses. That last tier requires documentation — receipts, bank statements, invoices showing the costs are linked to the breach.

Mark your calendar for summer. If you were hit by this breach, don't miss the window.
