Jazz legend Abdullah Ibrahim dies at 91

The South African pianist and composer, discovered by Duke Ellington and author of over 70 albums, passed away peacefully in Germany after a brief illness.

Abdullah Ibrahim, the internationally renowned South African jazz pianist and composer, died Monday, June 15, at age 91 in Germany, his family announced.

Born in 1934, Ibrahim made his professional debut at 15. In 1963, he was discovered while performing in a Zurich club by American jazz pianist Duke Ellington, with whom he would later perform in New York.

Ibrahim recorded more than 70 albums throughout his career. "He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family in Germany, following a brief illness," his family said in a statement.
