Nate Erskine-Smith, the Liberal MP representing Beaches-East York, is stepping down from the House of Commons. He announced his resignation Thursday in an email to supporters, inviting volunteers to a celebration of his decade in Parliament.
Erskine-Smith was first elected in 2015 and briefly served as housing minister under Justin Trudeau, then under Mark Carney. His federal career comes as his plans to move into Ontario provincial politics have stalled.
He lost a Liberal nomination for a provincial byelection in Toronto last month and contested the results, arguing irregularities in the nomination process. The party rejected his appeal in late May.
His email does not specify when he intends to leave Parliament or whether he still plans to run for the Ontario Liberal leadership. The MP has not yet responded to requests for comment.
Erskine-Smith's departure opens the door for a federal byelection in his Toronto riding.
