The City of Toronto is giving away 1,100 FIFA Fan Fest tickets to residents of Liberty Village and Fort York on a first-come, first-served basis, but the announcement has sparked backlash over the tight distribution window and limited availability.
Tickets will be distributed from a station at 55 Fort York Blvd. on Wednesday, June 24 at 3 p.m. To qualify, residents must provide proof of address for either neighbourhood, follow The Bentway on Instagram, and have a Ticketmaster account.
Passes are available for select dates in July—July 2, 4, 5, 11, and 14—but will be assigned randomly. Residents cannot choose their preferred dates.
The giveaway comes amid widespread frustration over FIFA World Cup ticket accessibility. Since tickets first went on sale, Toronto soccer fans have complained about high prices, limited availability, and difficulty securing seats.
Online, many residents criticized the distribution plan. "A great initiative but why is it happening during work hours and why is it only 550 pairs of tickets for a neighbourhood of thousands who have had their parks taken away for 3 months," one Instagram user posted. Another pointed out the timing conflict: "Canada is playing Switzerland at 3 p.m. on June 24. Most residents who would appreciate these tickets will be busy watching the game." A third resident expressed frustration over access: "Only one day at the most inconvenient time?!? People have to work to afford this expensive city!!!" Some voiced broader concerns about infrastructure and future event planning in the area.
