The Global Energy Show opens Tuesday and is expected to draw 30,000 attendees and 500 exhibitors to Calgary for three days of energy-sector talks and deal-making.

Day 1 begins with an address from federal Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson on "building an energy superpower." Later that morning, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith takes the stage. In the afternoon, B.C. Energy Minister Adrian Dix will speak—potentially sparking debate over the proposed northwest bitumen pipeline that Smith has been pushing.

Last year, Smith made an early pitch for that pipeline to the northwest coast, something the B.C. government has staunchly opposed. The Alberta government is aiming to file an application by July 1 to the federal major projects office, though the project has no private-sector backer yet.

This year's show is putting more focus on AI data centres, a growing demand rapidly expanding across North America. Sessions will cover how that sector is reshaping energy demand and investment.

The timing matters. Middle East tensions are rattling energy markets, and the federal government is trying to bolster Canada's status as a reliable global energy supplier. For Calgary—still the energy sector's Canadian hub—this show is a chance to shape the conversation around where Canada's energy future goes.
